I agree that these factors are particularly important. Kindness is very much overlooked in society today and in relationships. My Ex thought the use of "please" and "thank you" was an insincere act and therefore a lie.

It is part of the nomenclature of a polite society and needs to be observed in relationships in particular. Polite words remind us that we are dealing with someone whom we should respect. Drop such salutations and there is less distinction between your addressing a loved one or a thief.

Respect, as you further define it, is of critical importance. Holding your tongue, for example, when you could otherwise say something critical about your SO is the exercise of respect.
