I agree. This disorder has become such a pop-psych diagnosis that it has lost a lot of its value. NPD is quite specific. There are many disorders that share many of the same diagnostic criteria.

Not everyone who has survived an abusive relationship has been the victim of a Narc but it sure seems like a lot of people who have want to believe that. This may be of value to the abused, to be able to lay blame on a particular malady in another but it doesn't substantiate the diagnosis.

The disorder may be difficult to treat but I don't think much of therapists who give up on a person before even trying. More complex disorders may require better therapists or treatments.

There are an awful lot of people who either have this disorder or one with similar criteria. Proclaiming them all to be untreatable at the outset doesn't say much for the efficacy of psycho therapy or psychopharmacology.
