I think in some circumstances and with some women, your takeaway makes sense, with others, absolutely not!! Many women are very provocative (men too).
They want to push the issue to the nth degree. You will never know if things will become violent or things will be said that are irreparable but sometimes you need to remove yourself from the situation before it gets that far.
Your ex GF is suggesting a "stand your ground" kind of philosiphy. Where that has beome codified (in FL, e.g.) it leads to violence and even death. If one of you starts throwing things at the other, it is the guy who is going to jail, not the girl.
When you have to get out of Dodge in order to de-escalate things, then that is what you have to do. And you may never know when it is soon enough until it is too late.
There are many GFs, BFs who have a need to vent without limit. This is something they feel they need to do but it is intolerable and extremely provocative...and dangerous. We now live in a society where people feel that the best strategy is to push the envelope to the limit. Civility starts to break down under those circumstances, not something to aspire to.
Interesting issue; thank you for broaching it.
