I think Trump's election is simpler than you are suggesting. It may be the case that he legitimizes peoples' bigotry, etc. but:

The best explanation I have heard about why one party wins and the other doesn't is: Sometimes the nation need a mother and sometimes it needs a father.

If you look at that as a simplistic reason for election results, you will see a lot of consistency.
