One of the better similes I have read in a long time. Your article reminds us of the differences between vocations and avocations. Very few people get to work in areas they love, but we can fulfill our needs through our avocations, and that sometimes has to be enough.
To be happy, I think we need to pursue, in one way or another, the ideals we had when we were younger. We have to remember though that espousing a calling for money often kills our desire for the ideal.
As someone who has, metaphorically, been an astronaut, fireman, lawyer, archeologist, etc., I am perfectly capable of ruining an ideal vocation LOL.
I like your writing; do it at least as an avocation; it has value to others.
