This wasn't, at first, self evident but it makes perfect sense. We are continually modulating our affect with some type of drug, whether exogenous or otherwise.
A typical day starts with gulping three cups of coffee and ends with at least the same number of drinks.
This allows us to operate at an eleven for most of the day. But humans weren't really designed to do that. It is a lifestyle, however, suborned by society
and rewarded...until we fail at it (and it is a setup for failure).
