You do not mention inheritance as a source of financial security. Almost all of the retired seniors I know who are doing well in retirement are doing so because they have an inherited nest egg.

Since the expectation of that nest egg was there for most of their lives, they were able to take risks that many others were not able to take. This may have added to the payoff they received.
